Grinding

The Basics

You can grind by jumping onto square rails. Sonic will progress automatically along the rail while grinding, but his speed will gradually decrease. When this happens, you can press the 2 Button to speed him up again. When grinding for long distances, press the 2 Button at regular intervals to prevent any speed loss.

You can perform Charge Jumps while grinding. This is useful when you want to avoid obstacles while grinding, or if you want to reach a high area.
There are hidden grind rails on some stages, and they may provide useful shortcuts.

While grinding, you can tilt the Wii Remote left and right to perform tricks in the direction you input. You can use tricks to leave the rail and stop grinding, or jump onto a different rail to continue grinding. Pulling off a grind trick into another grind gives you Experience Points, so give it a try when you have the opportunity. When you equip Quick Air-type skills, however, your controls when doing tricks will change, so you’ll need to adjust accordingly.
